Spotlight of Appreciation: Elizabeth Sutherland
I could write one of these for each name and the members of each organization above. But since, Philadelphia, she is one of your own, I want to raise up Liz. She did light design for my first two directing projects in Chicago. And the epiphany came when I struggled to get across what I wanted for certain scenes in one of those productions. In a throw away comment, I lamented that what I really wanted was what I saw in a Batman comic book, illustrated by an artist who had somehow made it look like the characters in the shadows were outlined in silver. Liz responded that she, “loved working with stuff like that.” She asked for the comic book. Yada-Yada-Yada…I’m sitting in tech and I suddenly exclaim that Liz did it! The actors looked like they were outlined in silver.
Years later, she listened, via Zoom to an early reading of Redeeming Time. It was really only to see what she thought of it. I had not noticed but during my reading she had taken two pages of lighting notes. I had not expected her to do that. She described her concept to me and I still dream of doing a production using those notes but…
…and here is the most important thing I have to say about who Liz is. She sat in on the meeting when we considered Franklin Inn Club as a venue. I made the comment that I was worried, even though we loved it, we couldn’t use her lighting . She shrugged and said that lights weren’t necessary. The space was perfect for the piece and would support the story.
After that Zoom reading she listened to, Liz immediately suggested Philadelphia Fringe. I would not be here without her. She is one of my favorite artists I’ve ever worked with.
Philadelphia, you should be proud of her.
