REDEEMING TIME

In the fall of 2022, during a period of multiple trials and traumas, both private and shared, I began to write for no other reason than it offered relief.

After hundreds of pages of history, poetry, introspection, and rage, I began to imagine something I had never planned to do in my life: write a one person piece.

The idea finally came when my son expressed dread at the literature class he was preparing to take in his senior year of high school. I had remembered writing something about what Shakespeare, poetry, and art in general had meant to my life; how I had experienced and also witnessed words, images, and expression combine, form, and reform to enrich and even save lives.

When I tracked the piece down, it dawned on me that this may be the first, rough draft of my performance piece.

After two years of drafts, readings, and performances for trusted friends online, in theatres, at colleges, a dance room at Old Town School of Music, and at a prison in Kentucky, Redeeming Time was created.

This piece is now ready and available for paid performances.

Information on Production and Performance

Redeeming Time is a blocked, one person performance piece that can be presented on a stage as small as 8’ X 6’. With a running time of just under an hour and ten minutes, it can be produced as a full play with basic lighting plot, with recorded music, pre and post show.

If the performance space is not equipped with lights and sound, portable equipment can be provided by the artist if performance is deemed within driving distance of Chicago.

Through workshops and readings, Redeeming Time has also been found to have value as a piece for performance at high schools and universities with the main target audience in those venues being arts students, but it also has appeal to all students.

The piece has also been well-received by the incarcerated and returned citizens since parts of the story deal with my relationships with them.
